Hello Friends, Durga Puja is almost upon us and it’s time to dress up in the traditional Sarees and Dhoti-Kurta, clean up our homes and welcome Goddess Durga, the daughter of the family. Durgotsava marks the victory of the goddess Durgaover the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the victory of good over evil. The nostalgia brought by the festival is entailing fun, feasts, merriment, partying, get-togethers, is amazing. It’s the day when Pitra Paksha or Shraadhh period ends and Devi Paksha begins. The fanfare of Devi Paksha is celebrated every autumn with pomp and vigour.
Pandals: The festivities encapsulate the perfect blend of ritual with religion and art. The grandeur of each decorated pandalsand its equally beautiful pratimas make the festivity ever more special. This is the time when the union of friends and family takes place, coming from every corner of the country. Everyone looks forward to offering pushpanjali, enjoy pandalhopping, relish savouries, and delight in the traditional music of dhaakis. The five days of beauty, joy and rituals is a sight to behold.
Food: During Pujo, the city sees food stalls literally in every corner of the city. The mouth-watering cuisines and the array of cutlets, Mughlai parantha, dimer devil, biryani, rosogollas, puchkas and other lip-smacking delicacies make the city a smorgasbord of food. People can find well-known restaurants, street food vendors and neighbourhood residents set up food stalls in and around various pandals to satiate the palate of devotees. My favourites are the momos in the New Market and thaalis at Ballygunge Place. You can also pamper your taste buds daab chingri and fish cutlet at Bhojohori Manna and Gondhoraj soufflé and malpua cheesecake at Bohemian.
Events: The city sees an array of cultural events taking place across all parts. One can immerse themselves in the RabindraSangeet, Rabindra Nritya and other dance and music performances at the pandals hosting cultural performances. What I am looking forward to is the night of grand musical extravaganza, the Vodafone Aagomoni event. The event heralds the onset of Durgotsav in the most iconic way with an eclectic mix of music and dance legends performing together.Vodafone Aagomoni 2018 will have performers like HariHaran, Rituparna Sengupta & troupe, Debajyoti Mishra, Rupankar Bagchi & Konineeca Banerjee, Lopamudra & Subhamita, Band Advaita, Bickram Ghosh and team, to name a few. It’s going to be an event to remember!
Durga Puja for Bengalis is the chronicle of spectacular ritualsthat run with the pulse of this city. So, I hope everyone has an incredible and blissful Pujo.
